Electronic Resources Management Specialist

Reporting to the Director of Library Technology, with additional lead work direction from the Systems and Metadata Librarian, the Electronic Resource Management (ERM) Specialist participates in managing the electronic resources life cycle for the University Library. The incumbent independently and collaboratively coordinates the library’s electronic resources, including configuring resources in the library management system, overseeing proxy server configurations, verifying coverage and access, and changes to collections and records.

The ERM Specialist is responsible for overseeing daily operations, which may include directly or indirectly providing lead work direction to other library and staff, as well as student workers. The incumbent works collaboratively with the Technical Services department and plays an integral role in ensuring uninterrupted access to electronic resources, coordinating the e-resource acquisitions process, and assessing resource usage, discovery, and accessibility for the University Library. Knowledge of library management systems and discovery systems, preferably Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo and PeopleSoft preferred.

In addition the following skills are required:

  • Thorough knowledge of library vendors and databases and of library acquisitions and licensing processes.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of electronic resource management principles, policies, practices and procedures and their relationship to overall library functions and other units, and the ability to apply this expertise and judgment to address unique problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of library collection itself, its organization, and classification schemes. Comprehensive knowledge of external on-line databases, systems and resources and trends pertaining
  • Comprehensive knowledge of external on-line databases, systems and resources and trends pertaining to electronic resource management, including expertise in searching strategies, database maintenance, journal linking, maintenance of proxy and authentication services, and e-resource troubleshooting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of policies and practices associated with ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources, as well as general knowledge of library bill of rights and code of ethics.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national electronic resource management standards and resources, including the ability to source and interpret information from such resources.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national and institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure full compliance with legal requirements.
  • Expertise in most aspects of automated and on-line catalog systems, including database maintenance functions.
  • Ability to participate in long range planning through the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data and information.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot complex technical and database problems that might involve multiple coordinated systems and services.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply complex information from technical and procedural documentation and manuals.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment; ability to learn new technologies and technical skills and adapt workflows and processes in response to external
  • and internal change.

Student Assistants

The Library is proud to be one of the largest student employers on campus. Student assistants work on an hourly basis to support a wide range of Library services, including public services, book shelving, technology services, Automated Retrieval System (ARS) support, and various administrative duties. The Library aims to cross-train student assistants so they may work in more than one area.

Flexible work shifts are available, including evenings and weekends. Pay is dependent on experience and skill levels; in the few cases where specific and specialized skill sets are sought, such as graphic design, video editing, or foreign language proficiency, or when advanced job responsibilities are assigned, the pay rate may increase. Library student employees can work a maximum of 20 hours per week.

To work in the Library, a student must be currently enrolled at Sonoma State University. All students are encouraged to apply.
